13+ and Common Entrance Tuition
Independent senior schools use the ISEB Common Entrance or their own exams to assess students applying to enter Year 9. Children are required to sit papers in Maths and English, and in other academic subjects. It is an expectation in top schools that students achieve good scores in a broad range of subjects.
Schools award a small number of 13+ academic scholarships to exceptional candidates. To qualify, a student must achieve an appropriately high mark in Common Entrance, or perform well in the ISEB Academic Scholarship or the school’s own in-house scholarship exam. These scholarship exams are generally based on the same syllabus as entrance exams, but include challenging questions that require more thought.
